Where to Start in Closing Accounts After a Loss

Finding and managing all of the accounts a person has can be a tedious thing - often taking several months. See the link below for partners that can manage this process for you.

  1. Create a Comprehensive List:
    • To effectively manage your loved one's accounts, subscriptions, and memberships, begin by compiling a detailed list of all of them.
  2. Consider the daily/weekly life activities to start adding to the list: Take into account a wide range of aspects, including:
    • Preferred shopping locations
    • Social media profiles and presence
    • Online and phone communication tools
    • Television viewing habits, both cable and streaming services
  3. Review Incoming Mail:
    • Examine your loved one's incoming mail, as it can be a valuable source for identifying accounts and subscriptions.
  4. Access Email (if possible) to: If you have access to your loved one's email account, utilize it to:
    • Search for accounts
    • Reset passwords (if necessary)
    • Close or transfer accounts directly
  5. If you have access to their smart phone, consider reviewing the apps that are downloaded - many of those will have account information and can lead to subscriptions that need to be managed.
